Scale Rule and Other Stories
Recognize these? Scale rules. Along with a proportion dial, I used one just about every day for years. I still have a pocket size one (insert geek joke here) that was with me all of the time. That now lives in my brief case, and I’m hard pressed to think of the last time I used it.
I do also own a slide rule. We were learning to use them in junior high when someone brought a pocket calculator in to class. No one – including the instructor – had ever seen one before. This is a very vivid memory. We were shocked that all you had to do was enter the numbers and this little device showed the answer correctly and instantly – every time. I do not think we continued with the slide rule instructions.
Having worked in the sign business for many years, I am constantly amazed by the changing technology that has affected the industry in ways large and small. I admit I get a bit nostalgic at times, when I see paint spatters and old rulers in the shop, but am also excited about all the new techniques and products available to us and our clients.
Our new website reflects our history as well as new advances in our processes. Each person and project tells a story and we hope to share many of them here, as well as some behind-the-scenes stories of what goes on every day here at Northeaster Signs. Stay tuned!
